There are so many resources for teaching 9/11 to students (Top 10 Websites for Teaching 9/11). One option is “First Pitch” by ESPN.

This ESPN 30 for 30 short film can be watched on vimeo and is 31:40. This segment can be shown as part of a high school US History class to show how baseball helped America heal following 9/11.

Prior to watching the clip, a teacher can review the branches of government. Discuss the different roles of the president. 

  • What are the 3 branches of government?
  • What are the roles of each branch?
  • What are the most important roles of the President?

A teacher can also introduce or reinforce the concept of “continuity and change” to explain how a president communicates with the citizens from fireside side chats, speeches, and now social media.  

Primary Source Analysis: Teachers can have the students analyze the speech. This American Rhetoric link includes the video and text of the speech. A teacher may want to print out the speech and have the students answer questions.
