  1. Do Not Take the Summer Off (Mentally or Physicially): Just like an athlete works on developing skills for a sport, high school students should spend time strengthening the mind. Read. Write. Do math problems. Complete Summer Work WELL! Keep the brain thinking.
  2. Know the 1st Day: Be sure to know the date of the 1st day of the school and the 1st day of the season. They usually will be different. It is important to plan for these very important days.
  3. Be in GREAT Shape: Serious high school athletes need to be in great shape. It is critical to individual and team success. Make conditioning a big priority.
  4. Be To School On Time: Such a simple task, but often very difficult. It is so important to simply show up and to show up on time. Be early!
  5. Sleep: Make sleep a priority. As a high school student-athlete doctors recommend between 8 – 10 hours per night. One study says 7 out of 10 students do not get the required amount of sleep. Proper sleep should be a main focus. It will have positive results in the classroom and on the field or court.
  6. Set Realistic Goals: Write down goals for school and sports. Be specific and be realistic. How many workouts will you complete a week? How many minutes will you read each night? How many days will you lift?
  7. Develop a Routine: There are only so many minutes in a day. Set a regular schedule for homework, workout, AAU , fall sports, band, etc. When you plan your plan, keep in mind what your goals are and work hard to achieve them.
  8. Be To Class On Time: Much like getting to school on, being in your seat BEFORE the bell lets your teacher know you value the class and are ready to learn and participate. If you stroll in after the bell, you are sending a message that you do not value the teacher or the class.
  9. Work During Class Time: This may seem simple, but so many people DO NOT WORK in class. If you are not a huge fan of homework, do all you can in class.
  10. Do Not Take Timeouts: Many coaches use timeouts to refocus a team. There may be times during the school day when this may be necessary for you to take a walk or a bathroom, but do not make a habit of leaving class simply to wander the halls.
  11. Smile and Say Hello in the Hall: Be friendly to staff and students.
  12. Do Homework: Average Time for Homework: College vs. High School Completing homework well is often the biggest divider between average students and honor roll students. It is all about effort. Give a good, solid effort and most teachers will reward that effort.
  13. Talk to Your Coach: Before you season starts, sit down and talk with the coach. Ask for feedback on what you can do to prepare for the season and also share your ideas on how you can improve and be best prepared for the role on the team.
