Parents hope that their children grow up to be law-abiding citizens, but educating them on the intricacies of the legal system can be a tricky task. The introduction to learning about law begins in the home at an early age when families develop a code of good behavior to adhere to. This teaches the basic principles of society, namely that rules are created to protect us and to keep us civilized. However, there is a clear difference between rules and laws, particularly when it comes to how people that break them are handled. Here are some fun ways to teach kids about the law and the consequences for those that commit an offense.
Role Play
This popular method of tutoring can be carried out at all stages of K-12. Younger kindergarten kids will enjoy dressing up as police officers and judges or acting out cops and robbers’ scenarios with the villains being carted off to jail at the end of the exercise. Older students can become engaged in realistic situations which are thought-provoking which allows them to explore different outcomes and strategies for dealing with criminals. For instance, what would happen if we let this type of crime go unpunished? Or what new laws would you like to create?
Expanding on the idea of using play as a teaching strategy, games are also a useful tool in learning about the law. Board games such as ‘Police Precinct’ allow players to take on the role of police officers in varying areas of specialism. Players must work together to collect evidence, solve the crime and ultimately arrest the suspect.
Celebrity Cases
The media constantly touts stories of youths being obsessed with celebrity culture. While this may be true, there are ways to take advantage of their interest. As the lives of celebrities are so accessible, it is possible to glean details about their involvement in various legal proceedings. Canterbury Law Group recommend that kids and tutors focus on the many high-profile divorce cases in the media which allow children to understand what happens to assets and the custody of children when a marriage ends. Similarly, murder trials such as the famous case of American Footballer OJ Simpson can teach children about courtroom battles and the complexities of the justice system.
Interaction With Police
What could be a better way of learning about the law, than meeting the police face-to-face and getting the chance to ask questions about their duties? At a younger age, this might involve a police officer visiting the classroom, or perhaps even a school visit to a police department. This gives children the opportunity to learn about the laws that police officers try to keep enforced. In later grades, teens might be interested in job shadowing at a local police department which will provide a deep insight into the day-to-day life of all levels of police officer, from a beat cop up to a sergeant. They might get a glimpse of life in forensic science, handling evidence at a crime scene. Some may even get to see an arrest! There are explorer programs available for older kids who take a particular interest in a future with the force.
By tutoring kids to learn the foundations of the legal system, you will be setting them up for a life as an upstanding citizen and may even nurture an interest in going into law as a career.
