First things first though, as an MC, you can either make or break an event. People at the event will literally depend on your mood and your emceeing skills to stay alert to the end. Therefore, you can never take chances; you have to be good. In fact, you have to be the best event MC ever!
- Recognize the theme of the event – The number one thing to do as a master of ceremony is to understand the type of event you are hosting. It could be a wedding, it could a formal meeting, or it could a birthday party. So, discover the type of event and the theme before you hold that microphone in your hands.
- Be ready to entertain, inform and keep the crowd amused – The focal point of a good master of ceremony knows how to add a mixture of good humor, stories and facts that will leave your crowd amused and interested to the end. With all these qualities, you sure will have a good time and so will your crowd.
- Be unpredictable and surprise your audience – There is nothing that people love more than a little surprises here and there. Therefore, as an MC, do not be predictable. For example, if you have been hired to host a wedding event, take time to research a thing or two that people don’t know about the couple. If possible, find out from friends and relatives something that will surprise the couple as well. People will remember the revelations more than the event itself.
- Keep the conversations going – The last thing you want as an MC is for your crowd to think that you are confident or sure of what you are saying. So, keep the conversations going. Ask the other speakers some questions that will engage both the audience and the speakers. Never for a minute look like you are out of words.
- Lastly, dress the part – As an event MC, all eyes will be on you. Therefore, if you want the crowd to take you seriously and respect your work, you MUST dress the part. For example, do not go to a formal event with rugged jeans and a sleeveless vest unless you want to make a fool of yourself.
Being as an MC might be the most enjoyable role to take but the truth of the matter is, you need to prepare in advance. And when the event comes to a close, end in style; keep it short and simple and don’t forget to acknowledge your audience.
