Coaching Youth Basketball 101

When coaching travel youth basketball, it is important to have a substitution pattern that best fits your coaching style and your team. Some factors that are important to consider are age, league type (competitive vs. recreational), minimum playing time requirements (This is based a 25% minimum play requirement with four eight minute quarters.) ALL players will play minimum by time the end of the 3rd quarter. This will allow the coach complete flexibility in the 4th quarter in close games.

This rotation is designed to eliminate some of the problems a team may encounter when the 2nd unit plays together. To avoid have the five weakest players on the court at the same time, this rotation keeps two of the top three players on the floor at all times.

For the 1st quarter, the starters will play 5:20 and the 2nd unit will play 2:40. This allows the starters to get into the flow of the game.

For the next two quarters, the team will ALWAYS have two of the three above average players on the court at all times. The top three players rotate two positions, subbing at the 5:20 and 2:40 marks. Each of these players will play 5:20. This is 66% of the quarter.

The 3 below average players will rotate one position. With this format, only one of the weaker players will be on the court at the same time. The substitution times will be the same as the above average players. This group will only play one shift, while the above average players will play two shifts. The playing time will be 33% of the quarter for this group

The four average players will split the final two spots and will play 50% of a quarter. The substitution mark for this group will be 4:00.

A coach may also choose to switch substitution positions in the 2nd & 3rd. With one team, there may not be a big difference between players #7 and #8. In this case the minutes can switch with

Above Average Players (3): Player #1, Player #2, Player #3
