How Do YOU Show Your Support for #Autism?
How do YOU plan on showing your support for World Autism Awareness Day on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 this year?!? It doesn’t take a lot of effort, or have to be expensive, to help raise awareness, understanding and acceptance for Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)[1]. Just last week, the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics came out with a report that Autism now affects 1 in every 50 US children, surprisingly more than the 1 in 88 previously reported.[2]
April is recognized as Autism Awareness Month prompting us all to do something to recognize the rising epidemic in the United States and around the world! There are many ways that you can show your support. You can elect to sign up as a volunteer in your local autism community[3], by wearing a team t-shirt to support someone you know that has been affected by Autism or by simply changing your social media profile picture to reflect Autism Awareness, Understanding and Acceptance.
Our Family Autism Oklahoma Piece Walk Team, “Nathan’s Voice“, puts together small Autism Awareness Goodie Bags to share with family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, healthcare providers and anyone else that we come across. We put the following inside a Ziploc sandwich bag and use ribbon or stickers to decorate the outside of each goodie bag :
-
A few pieces of various kinds of candy
-
Information on our autism team and local support group
-
A small item to signify Autism Awareness (i.e. stress ball, lanyard, etc.)
Decide if a community yard sale, a restaurant night or maybe a charity bike run to benefit your local autism group would spark interest and raise Autism Awareness in your community. You may have some ideas of your own to show your support! No matter what you decide to do in support of World Autism Awareness Day, please tell your friends and family so that they can join in for the cause…you would be surprised at how many are looking to make a difference in their local community!
Please feel free to share how YOU are supporting World Autism Awareness Day by leaving us a comment below. We always appreciate those that take the time to give us feedback on our posts!
