Writing Advice for College Students

My name is Jack Hanford, before I start I am going to give you a brief summary of who I am and how I got here. I am 18 years old, fresh out of High School. Most kids my age aren’t interested in Education, but I work full time at a Education Technology start-up in Silicon Valley – We will touch on that later.
A year ago around this time I was in the college application process, it was my senior year and when I was suppose to be tapering down in school I was terrified of what I had found. Within the span of two weeks I realized that my unmotivated, not caring attitude may have just dug me into a hole I couldn’t get out of. For the first time in my life I really thought I messed up. My current grades, accumulated GPA, ACT were all mediocre at best. My friends were getting letters of acceptance and I was afraid to even submit one application.
At this point in my life I realized I messed up, I stayed up one night wondering where I first went wrong. I couldn’t think of one point in time where I blatantly chose the wrong thing. I had always thought of school in the wrong light, I looked at is a place everyone had to go to and I just wanted to get out as fast as I could. But was that my fault?
We have these wonderful subjects like Chemistry, instead of doing fascinating experiments we have crammed chapters of work into one black and white piece of paper. And we wonder why kids hate class? Yes standardized tests give us a centralized metric for measuring how students stack up against each other. But do they actually measure what was learned?
It is common knowledge that our Education System is broken. I am a prime example of a student who has been pushed along doing the minimum just to pass. I am very passionate about education now that I have been through the system.
The company I work for is claco. We are a small team that is hoping on changing education. We are giving teachers digital place to distribute lesson plans internationally. We recognize that the education system isn’t where it should be and we hope that with our product we can at least put ourselves on the right track.
Jack Hanford is a Michigan high school graduate, and currently lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. He is currently working on developing Claco.com, a place for teachers to build and share lesson plans online. He is passionate about Education and loves Technology.
