TeachMeets started off in the UK by Ewan McIntosh. These informal educational meetings first took their form over a pint in the local pubs. From those first informal meetings grew a movement of teachers gathering together to share best practices and trends in educational technology. TeachMeetNJ was started in 2010 after Jason Bedell learned about TeachMeets that are common in the UK. Jason started TeachMeets in Tennessee and New Jersey. Unfortunately in 2012, Jason could no longer run the event and organizational duties were take over by Kyle Calderwood.
TeachMeets are 100% free to attend and are similar to EdCamps with two key differences.

  1. The sessions are only 20 minutes in length
  2. The schedule is pre-determined

Attendees will have the full schedule of sessions available to them a few days prior to the event. They do not have to register for each session, and instead choose whichever interests them the most. The best part is, if they don’t like a session they are encouraged to leave and find another that does. Sessions are designed to give a brief overview of a topic but also encourage discussion amongst the presenter and attendees in the room. It is a very laid back atmosphere where shirts and ties are not needed, and casual attire is encouraged.
Sessions are given by teachers, administrators from all over the tri-state area. You can sign up to present here. We also have virtual presenters from around the world, who use Google Hangouts to present from their location. These sessions are archived for later use for those that are not able to attend a particular session or the conference itself. To view some example sessions from last year’s TeachMeetNJ, check out our sessions page and also our virtual sessions page. In addition, our TeachMeet does something that no other TeachMeets do. Last year, we began a new process where all the sessions in the morning were the normal 20 minute length, but in the afternoon attendees are able to vote for the top 10 sessions that they would like to get more hands-on time with a 1 hour expanded session. These longer sessions run concurrently in one afternoon slot before leaving for the day. After lunch there is a 45 minute ‘App Smackdown’ session that gathers all the attendees together and gives volunteers 2 minutes to show off their favorite app or website. This is generally the most popular event of the day! At the end of the day we gather together once more to give out the fabulous prizes are sponsors have donated. Prizes can include a software subscription for your class or school, educational technology hardware (such as iPads or Document cameras, and even gift cards.)
It really is a great day of learning.
