My Town Tutors loves moms! Our goal is to be a great resource for any parent who is looking for a tutor. We also want to provide useful information for parents who do not need a tutor.
One way is selecting a “Mom of the Month. Below is our February Mom of the Month: Samantha from the website Have Sippy Will Travel.
What is your current job of position?
I’m a writer, blogger, and social media marketer. I have several degrees in education and was a teacher for many years.
Describe your parenting philosophy?
I think parents need to be parents and not buddies – it’s your job to create a functional member of society. Have fun with your kids, and enjoy their childhood. Spend time with them. Let them be kids, get messy, and play. Interact with them. They don’t need to be scheduled like little adults. Consistency is key – knowing boundaries and sticking to them is important (yes, even if they have a tantrum).
What is the focus of your blog?
I run a parenting, product review, and travel blog – all about family and fun. It pretty much covers all the topics most parents deal with on a regular basis, plus has some fun stuff like chances to win prizes.
How long have you been writing? 3 years for my blog and writing in general, for about 5.
Who is your audience?
Mostly parents and grandparents.
How do you use social media to connect with other parents? I am in the top 10 ranked Mom Bloggers for 2012 (via Kred) for social media influence and outreach, and I like using many social media channels to connect with others. Twitter is my favorite way to chat (@HaveSippy), but I love Foursquare and Facebook for a quick update or interaction as well.
What is your advice to parents on social media?
Have fun with it, and use it! If you allow your kids to use social media, monitor it closely and make sure they never give out personal details like last name, or where they live. Keep them from interacting with people you (and they) don’t know.
What advice in general do you have to parents today?
Teach manners and common courtesy to your children – it’s a dying art. No one finds an annoying child amusing but it’s own parent.
What book would you recommend to parents? Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child, for any new parent. And of course, Goodnight, Moon 🙂
