Hanover High teacher founds online tutoring company
By Kelly Anne Clinton Posted Oct. 18, 2010
Teachers who tutors
Tutors who teach.
That’s the mission of a new company, that’s run by Hanover teachers and just getting their feet wet on the South Shore.
“Teachers are the best tutors,” Molloy said. “They know how to relate to kids, how to break it down for them and they also know how to stay current with the curriculum. And so with My Town Tutors, [teachers] are doing what they love, while making a little extra money.”
Molloy has been teaching history at Hanover High and coaching the boys’ varsity basketball team since 1995.
Molloy said he and Plummer came up with the idea for the tutoring website a few years ago when Plummer was working a part-time job at the Marshfield Fair as a security guard and earning just $10 an hour.
“So many teachers try to make ends meet by picking up another job,” Molloy said. “And those jobs that they end up picking up are unrelated to teaching and are in retail or working at the Marshfield Fair, and they are usually overqualified for them.”
Molloy said he and Plummer thought tutoring would make more sense for a teacher as a part-time job.
“With an experienced teacher as their kid’s tutor, parents can expect to see results in their child’s performance,” Molloy said.
As for students who sign up through the website, Molloy said they would get a trained professional to tutor them.
“Teaching is a skill whether it’s one to one or 25 to one,” said Molloy. “Teachers have the techniques to get the lesson across and to make sure the students develop certain skill sets for that lesson, and also for the future so that they excel academically.”
During an interview last week, Molloy pulled up the My Town Tutors’ website on his projector. He typed in Hanover in the ‘area’ prompt and the names of more than 50 teachers willing to tutor popped up. He then showed how those viewing the website can read about the teacher and their fields of expertise, and request a time and place to meet with them.
The teachers’ rates are also listed and they can vary anywhere from $30 to $80/hour, Molloy said.
M0lloy said he and his co-founders have high expectations for the new company.
“We hope someday to be the best resource for parents in the country for tutors for grades K through 12,” M0lloy said.
He added that the company offers a simple formula with a simple approach, that teachers make the best tutors.
“With all the advances in technology, learning comes down to the relationship with the teacher and the students, and to have that one-on-one time with a teacher is so valuable,” Malloy said. “We’re on to something that parents need, guidance counselors and teachers need too.”
