My Town Tutors is the nation’s 1st National Directory of teachers who tutor. Our goal in 2014 is to expand our network of local teachers who tutor to 1,000 teachers! In 2013 we had over 150,000 visitors to our site from all 50 states.
One of our most popular posts is our Connected Educators list. Our followers love connected educators who are willing to share there knowledge and experience, however our list only includes twitter profiles. Many of our followers want to learn more about some of these incredible individuals!
What is your current job of position?
I am a 4th grade teacher at Eastover Elementary in Bloomfield HIlls, Michigan. I am also the co-founder of Two Guys and Some iPads, The Two Guys Show podcast, as well as the augmented reality meet up group called AR Detroit.
What is your educational background?
I graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 2010 with a Bachelor of science degree in Elementary Education with a major in Reading and minor in Early Childhood Education.
Describe your educational philosophy and educational vision?
My educational philosophy is constantly changing the more I learn from my PLN. One consistent in my philosophy and vision is the focus of creating a love for learning in my students. The love of learning is a fire that needs to be lit at an early age, otherwise we have missed an crucial opportunity to have a positive impact.
How do you grow and engage your professional learning network?
I use many platforms to grow and engage with my professional and personal learning networks. I like to use Twitter (@TechMinock), face to face interactions at conferences, and our Two Guys Show podcast. I also engage my PLN through our educational blog www.twoguysandsomeipads.com.
What is the greatest benefit of your professional network?
I can honestly say my PLN has changed my life. The ability to learn from, and collaborate with educators and friends around the globe has been a great benefit for not only me, but my students as well. My students now have the opportunity to connect and learn with others globally.
If you blog, what is the focus of it?
We (Brad Waid @techbradwaid) have a couple different focuses when we blog. We want to share tools we call “Game Changing.” These are tools we use in our classrooms and have seen make an impact on student learning. Our main goal is to share resources, and stories to help people worldwide!
How long have you been writing?
I have been writing for a long time but my first blog post on twoguysandsomeipads.com was May 11th of last year, so our blog is still very new.
Who is your audience?
I believe we have a large range of audience that visits our blog, watches our live podcast, and attends our presentations. I think our audience is educators, people who enjoy technology, and people who like to have fun!
How do you use social media to connect with other educators?
I mainly use Twitter to connect with educators worldwide.I believe educational twitter chats are a perfect and powerful way to learn. I use it to build my PLN and continue to learn.
What is your advice to teachers on social media and education?
My advice to teachers on social media is use it often to connect with amazing people worldwide. The relationships you create with your PLN will change your life and positively impact the lives of your students.
What advice in general do you have to teachers today?
My advice to every teachers is understand the power and importance they play in the world. They have the ability to touch and inspire the lives and the only way to do that is to build strong relationships with their students. I believe relationships are the essential component to everything inside and outside the walls of my classroom.
Describe a teacher who has had a significant impact on your professional development?
I have been extremely fortunate to have amazing people impact my life but if I had to describe one, it would be my mentor teacher Ann Keenan. She has taken me under her wing since I started teaching in Bloomfield Hills. Her impact on me branches much farther than professional development. Ann has made me a better educator, and a better person.
What book would you recommend to teachers?
I would recommend Wooden: A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections On and Off the Court. This book is great for education and life in general.
