Author Bio: Renee from Mother Daughter Book Reviews, a website where my son (6), daughter (10), and I (the Mom) share what we think about some of the children’s books we run across. We started Mother Daughter Book Reviews so that we could give a kid-parent perspective on some books that we are reading. Suffice it to say that we don’t always agree on what constitutes a “good book” – and in some respects, that’s ok. One thing is obvious: both my kids are voracious readers (as am I!)
Over the last year, the books we have reviewed for our website were almost exclusively obtained from authors, publishers, and publicists requesting reviews. As a result, we have come across some wonderful books including many from brilliant independent (“indie”) authors. But here’s our little secret: both my kids plow through multiple library books every week and we simply don’t have time to review them all.
My daughter and I have sat down to come up with some of the Best Book Series For Tween Girls that we’ve run across over the past year. In some cases, she has read all the books in the series; while in other cases, she’s still waiting for the holds to come through at the library. Here they are in no particular order along with a few sentences about each straight from my daughter.
The Sisters 8
Title (1st Book): Annie’s Adventures (The Sisters 8, Book 1)
Author: Lauren Baratz-Logsted
Number of Books in Series: 9
Number of Pages (1st Book): 156
Recommended Ages: 7
Daughter Says: The books in the The Sisters 8 series are about 7 year old girls (octuplets) whose parents go missing and they have to find each of their powers and gifts to find out what happened to their parents. Each book is about one girl and the last one is about all the girls. I’ve read all the books in the series and I loved them.
The Sisters Grimm
Title: The Fairy Tale Detectives (The Sisters Grimm, Book 1)
Author: Michael Buckley

Number of Pages (1st Book): 316
Recommended Ages: 9+
Daughter Says: The Sisters Grimm books are about two sisters, Daphne who is 8 and Sabrina who is 12. The sisters are detectives who solve mysteries that involve magic. Book 1 has a giant in it and Book 2 has Rumpelstiltskin who steals the kids of the Everafters and who tries to break the barrier keeping the Everafters in the city where they can’t cause problems. I have read the first two books and can’t wait to read the rest of the books.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians
Title: The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 1)
Author: Rick Riordan
Number of Books in Series: 5
Number of Pages (1st Book): 400
Recommended Ages: 10+
Daughter Says: Percy Jackson and the Olympians is about a boy who is a demi-God. His Dad is Poseidon. He has adventures that involve characters from Greek myths. He has powers that he uses to help save the day. I have read the first two books and I’m currently reading the third book. I really like reading books involving fantasy and mythology.
The Lemonade War
Title: The Lemonade War (The Lemonade War Series, Book 1)
Author: Jacqueline Davies
Number of Books in Series: 4
Number of Pages (1st Book): 192
Recommended Ages: 9+
Daughter Says: The Lemonade War is about a brother and sister (Evan and Jessie) who each start a lemonade stand and they have a bet: whoever makes the most money, gets to keep the money from both lemonade stands. Evan steals Jessie’s money and then Evan’s friend steals all of their money. That’s how the first book ends and in Book 2, Evan and Jessie must work together to get the money back. I’ve read the first 2 books in the series and I want to read the next two to see what happens next.
Goddess Girls
Title: Athena the Brain (Goddess Girls, Book 1)
Authors: Joan Holub and Suzanne Williams
Number of Books in Series: 14
Number of Pages (1st Book): 180
Recommended Ages: 7+
Daughter Says: The Goddess Girls books are all about Greek goddesses and gods who are attending Mount Olympus Academy. They are teenagers in the books. Each book focuses on one Goddess or famous mortal from Greek mythology like Athena, Aphrodite, Persephone, Artemis, Pandora, Pheme, Medusa, and Cassandra. I really love the Goddess Girls books because I like mythology and I like how the characters are teenagers. I’ve read all of them except the one about Cassandra because it’s not released yet [coming December 3, 2013].

Poison Apple Books
Title: The Dead End (Poison Apple Books, Book 1)
Author (Book 1): Mimi McCoy
Number of Books in Series: 10
Number of Pages (1st Book): 192
Recommended Ages: 8+
Daughter Says: The Poison Apple books are all about girls who have encounters with ghosts, creepy fortune tellers, vampires, werewolves, and other supernatural beings. Each book is about one or two girls. The girls from different books don’t know each other. I’ve read all of them except the first one! lol I really love them because I like books about fantasy and magic.
Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events
Title: The Bad Beginning (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Book 1)
Author: Lemony Snicket
Number of Books in Series: 13
Number of Pages (1st Book): 176
Recommended Ages: 8+
Daughter Says: A Series of Unfortunate Events is about three kids whose parents die in a fire who go live with their cousin Count Olaf. The Count is trying to kill them or marry one of them to inherit their fortune. There is a lot of dying in this book so don’t read it if you don’t like people dying. I read two of the books and I really liked the story. I also really liked the movie.
