The Difficulties of Learning English

Image result for learn english

Sometimes learning a foreign language appears to be quite a challenging task. Everyone who had once tried to master the language of global communication faced with a lack of understanding of tenses, inability to speak fluently, misunderstanding of speech, forgetting words and some other problems that push away from becoming a guru.

But is it possible to cope with all these difficulties and speak English clearly?

Today, we’ll consider the most common problems of learning English and give some tips on to cope with them. If you’re going to become an advanced speaker, the paper is just for you!

#1 The Inability to Speak English

Some people can’t speak English despite the fact they learn it for years. The main reason for this is that a typical learner spends up to the 90% the training time on the study of the theory, but once faced with a foreigner, can’t express the thoughts clearly.

Don’t forget that you learn English for the purpose of communication! The ratio of theory to practice should be at least 20/80. Be sure to apply the rule to practice as soon as you learn it.

Here are a few tips:

  • Start talking from the very beginning. Imagine that you are learning to play the guitar. Even if you know the notes and how to put your fingers to play, you still can’t play. Over time and if you train hard, you don’t think how to play but do it automatically. The same applies to English. It makes no sense to teach the theory to “one day” speak the language.

  • Abstain from memorization. It is inefficient if you don’t study where and how to use the word. To remember the word, use it in your speech.

  • Learn from simple to complex. Do not immediately jump to complex materials; otherwise, you will have a mess in your head.

  • Sharpen each rule to perfection. There’s no need to try to learn as much theory as possible in a short time. Better sharpen each chapter until you feel confident in new skills.

  • Practice often and without interruption. Large gaps between classes significantly decrease your progress tempo.

#2 Lack of Understanding of English Speech

To communicate in English, you need to not only be able to speak, but also to understand the interlocutors. The lack of listening skills leads to the fact that the person does not understand the meaning of what was said because he/she can’t recognize some words.

Some listening advice:

  • Listen to what you’re interested in. Now you can find a lot of different audio content on any topic. Choose what’s interesting to you to learn English and get the information you need.

  • Listen to what you can understand. If you do not know the words, it is unlikely you will understand the speech. Do not take the material much higher than your level of expertise.

  • Do not translate English sentences. Imagine that you are listening to a lecture. While you mentally translate one sentence, the lecturer has already come to the middle of the next one. Try to immediately understand the interlocutor. For example, you hear: “My car is blue”. There’s no need to translate it – the picture of a blue car is already in your head! In this case, you just know what was said without the translating the sentence.

#3 Constant Forgetting the English Words you Know

Are you familiar with the situation when you can’t remember the right word, but you know exactly you knew the meaning?

To remember new words better, use them in your speech. Depending on the complexity, make from 3 to 10 sentences.

#4 Problems with English Tenses

To cope with English tenses, learn them in three consecutive steps:

  1. Understand situations that require the use of a particular tense.

  2. Understand the sentence structure.

  3. Make sentences using the tense.

#5 The Inability to Think in English

Another popular issue is the attempts to translate what you want to say from your native language to English. Because of this, you speak slowly and constantly thinking how to construct a sentence.

When we begin to think and speak the language, we go through a few steps and gradually develop our skills. We start with the most simple, then build more and more complex sentences, and then can freely express our thoughts.

  1. When we start learning any language, we begin with the words. For example, you’ve learned a new word “table.” Every time you look at the table, try to mentally construct sentences with this word.

  2. At the next stage, learn how to build sentences and try to understand the most basic and simple rules. Do not worry about the correctness.

  3. Learn new grammatical structures. At this step, your thoughts become wider and richer. At first, you do it at a low speed. But gradually you will pass all the stages and eventually be able to freely express your thoughts in English.

Learning English isn’t too hard if applying the tips above. Follow the given advice and start applying your knowledge to practice right now!
