- A Teacher’s School Year
Well here you are, just less than 3 weeks away from the 1st day of school. Now what?
- Check Your School Email: Yes, it is time to check your school email to see what the administrators have been doing since the teachers and students left. In most schools, they will be more than happy to share with the staff how hard they have been working. There will be some information shared about personal coming and going. There also will be updates to class lists and class schedules. At some point there will be information shared about the 1st day of school, professional development, and focus points for the school year. Do not spend too much time checking emails, but look for the important ones.
- Enjoy Time with Family and Friends: It is coming, like preparation for a hurricane. The first weeks of school will be a huge adjustment that will take all your time and energy, so be sure to spend time with the people you enjoy and love being with. If you are a veteran teacher, you are fully aware of the transition from summer vacation to school mode, so make the most of it.
- Enjoy Your Favorite Summer Meal: Save the best for last. Enjoy your favorite summer meal at home or at a restaurant. This is a great way to celebrate the end of the summer.
- Exercise: Time will be tight once school gets started, so try to squeeze in some exercise for the final weeks of summer. This momentum may carry over to the start of the school year. If you find it hard to exercise during the school year, make the most of your days. As you start to think about the school year, who knows, maybe you will come up with an incredible lesson plan or unit for your students.
- Plan Day the 1st Day of School with Students: Each level of teaching will have a different 1st day of school. High school teachers will hand out course objectives, class rules and a syllabus. It is important to make a great 1st impression, learn students names, and establish a safe and comfortable learning environment for all students.
- Finish Your Summer Reading: One of the greatest joys for teachers is the chance to enjoy a good read during the summer months. Many teachers will read several books over the course of a summer. Be sure to finish the summer strong with reading and finish that last book if possible.
- Finish your Summer To Do List: The summer is often a time for teachers to catch up on home improvements and house projects. Be sure to complete what you can but do not create stress by trying to do to much before the start of school. Also do not take on big project in the fall if you can help it. You will have plenty to occupy your time as you start the school year.
