You don’t need to hike up a mountain or raft down a river to have some outdoor fun with your family—you can go on a nature adventure right outside your front door! PLUM LANDING, the PBS KIDS project that connects 6- to 9-year-old kids to nature, has just debuted a new mobile app called Plum’s Creaturizer. Kids and families can use the app to build wild creatures, then take photographs of their creatures outdoors. Questions from Plum prompt kids to think about how each creature they create can find what it needs to survive. The goal of the app is to provide opportunities for kids and their families to investigate environmental science in a thoughtful way and have fun exploring the outdoors together.

Since its debut in September 2015, Plum’s Creaturizer has been featured by Apple as a “Best New App” and was recently nominated for a  2016 Kidscreen Award in the  Best Kids Learning App—Smartphone category.

Cool stuff about Plum’s Creaturizer

  • Build a billion (really!) unique creatures using over a hundred body parts based on real animals.

  • Customize each creature’s body, head, legs, eyes, tail, wings, ears, horns, and skin.

  • Take photos of your creature outdoors, “photobombing” them into the scene.

  • Complete missions for each creature in which you consider its needs (habitat, diet, and adaptations).

  • Answer questions to get you thinking about how your creatures might live – how they hunt, eat, look for water, make homes, defend themselves, or raise their young.

  • Watch a slideshow featuring a day in the life of your creature.

  • Visit the gallery, displaying all your creatures, and add to, review, or edit your photos. Photos are saved to the in-app Gallery and your device’s camera roll.
