Healthcare sees the biggest boom ever. Unemployment is at an all-time low at 2.6%. Last year saw an increase in new job opportunities by 374,000. The first six months of 2017 saw an exponential growth in the healthcare recruiting. A survey of 352 healthcare recruiters in 2017 reports a whopping 23% increase in job postings on latest sites.

Employers are looking for long-term employees

However, it is true that all healthcare focused companies are still reluctant to use temporary or contract employees. The high acquisition cost involved with temporary staffing agencies are the main hindrance in the process. Thus, about 80% of healthcare recruits want their employees to have at least 2 to 5 years’ worth experience in their specialized field. This includes both physicians and nurses.

The greatest shortages are in family medicine, psychiatry and internal medicine in 2017. Passive recruiting techniques are thriving under the surface. These useful yet understated recruiting techniques expect to increase the bulk in hiring by the end of this year. Almost 30% of these recruiters are planning to reach out to “passive candidates.” Social media, blogging channels, and medical apps are playing a critical role in the robust recruitment of passive candidates.

Recruiters are going for employee hunts

Healthcare professionals now expect the employers to come to them. They have presences in social media including LinkedIn and Facebook. This allows hospitals, facilities, and clinics to directly see verify and confirm the presented credentials of a medical professional. Doctors and nurses now upload their current resume on LinkedIn; this allows them to become visible to appropriate recruiting services. Social media based medical recruiting has increased by almost 66% since last year.

Job recruiters are making use of new-age technology to interview and select new professionals. For doctors who are thinking of hopping jobs or nurses who are already serving their tenure, these agencies are holding online interviews. Using Skype or WeChat makes it convenient for both parties to test the waters before finalizing the deal.

How does this affect new graduates?

This is beneficial for the fresh graduates as well. They are mostly looking for longer stints to gain experience and strengthen their resume. Even interns from medical schools, nursing colleges, and research centers are seizing this opportunity to seek out new job possibilities in the healthcare sector. They are thinking in long-term instead of 2 or 3 months internships.

What is the present challenge?

Most of the new respondents (as many as 64%) had to pay more than they did back in 2016. The recent surveys report that all healthcare recruiters have a strong bench of talent. They need technical help to manage such mammoth quantities of data from job portals and interviews. In the meanwhile, they need to work on their Applicant Tracking System to ensure a low applicant drop-off.

The face of healthcare is changing. 90% of all health care professionals state that they need employer branding while applying for a job. Now it is up to the employers to bridge the gap between their employee demands and the facilities they are ready to provide.
